A Faithful Reflection

Earth is not heaven
so eyes touch not I am who am.
Instead of me, images of me
I have placed on earth for Man.

Images, Lord, where?
I look but do not see.
God! God! Where are you?
Please show yourself to me!

You, your sisters and brothers
of humanity formed and by divinity inspired
are my mirrors designed to reflect to others
the image of God.

Then, Lord, your mirrors
are broken and in need of repair.
I gaze at them and godliness
is an image that's rare.

I tested the mirrors
With my dearly beloved Son.
He proved my design works.
The fidelity of His image was second to none.
But an ordinary man like me Lord,
not the Son of God,
trying to reflect your image,
doesn't do a very good job.

My Son was an ordinary man
Yet He fulfilled His design
Try harder.
More reflection; less whine.

I am sorry Lord.
Please forgive me my sin.
When others look at me
An image of You will reflect back to them

You were designed to be my mirror
made to reflect my image to men
And its fidelity is the sole criterion
on which you will be judged at the end.

Commentary

We are told we were made in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26-27). Have you ever wondered why? Has anyone ever told you why? God uses us as mirrors to reflect His image to the world. He wants the world to know Him by looking at us. Likewise, it was through Jesus that we know God (John 14) (Paragraph 73 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church). Therefore, always ask yourself whether what you say, do and think properly presents God to other. If you start thinking this way, a lot of nasty habits start to disappear. Holiness is directly proportional to the fidelity by which we reflect the image of God to others.
