Dabbling with God

And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God. (Luke 9:62)

You cannot be a dabbler with God. Either you are in or you are out. There is no in between. A relationship with God is not something you can take out of the drawer and don on the Lord's day and then doff and put back in a drawer for the rest of the week. It does not work like that. A relationship with God is existential. It imbues our whole being. It is about an intimate one-on-one collaboration between us and God whose purpose is to repair the kingdom of God within us that has been damaged by sin. The spiritual life is a full time - not a part time - job. But you do not have to be a priest, religious, minister, rabbi, etc to live the life of the spirit. How easy it is to devote yourself to God when you hold such a job. Don't be fooled when you hear them complain about how tough their job is. It is much harder to devote yourself to God when you are a civilian. If you want to grow in the spiritual life, you mustn't dabble. You must surrender your independence and submit yourself to the will of God. Not to worry though. St. Faustina teaches us that the will of God is love and mercy itself. Moreover, never confuse the will of God with the will of a man made religion. Sometimes they overlap; other times they don't.
