The fire of holiness
God lit inside our soul.
Its light drives away the darkness.
Its warmth drives away the cold.

But the cold and darkness,
frightened by the flame,
plotted to extinguish it
so against us they took aim.

Yet the power to put it out
to snuff our holy flame
is held in our own hands
only ours to wax or wane.

To do what they
themselves could not,
they fooled us into thinking
that holiness is not so hot.

Into their trap we fell
hook, line and soul
we doused the fire of holiness
Dark and cold had achieved their goal.

Or so they thought!

God loves His children
and wishes them warmth and light
so a pilot light He kindled
and began to set things right.

God’s pilot light is the Jews,
the guardians of the flame.
They kept knowledge of God alive
and kept holy His name.

Then God sent fuel for the fire.
An incendiary is God's son.
Ignited by the pilot light into a conflagration
Run cold and darkness, run.

Wild the flame of holiness spreads
from the Jews to beyond.
Forging between us and our God
a new covenant, a new bond.

Cherish the flame of holiness.
Never let it blow out.
Pass it to your neighbors.
Over cold and darkness, only it has clout.
